Nestled in the heart of London’s EC4, Hare & Tortoise delivers an authentic taste of Japan and broader Asian cuisine that truly captivates the senses. Specializing in Japanese, Chinese, and sushi dishes, this unassuming basement restaurant at 90 New Bridge St offers a cozy yet bustling environment where flavorful tradition meets good value.
The menu at Hare & Tortoise is a treasure trove for lovers of vibrant, well-crafted Asian dishes. Their salads provide an enticing start—imagine the Green Salad with its fresh mixed leaves, creamy avocado, crisp cucumber, and briny wakame tossed in a subtle homemade Japanese dressing. The Gomadare Tofu Salad is a standout for vegetarians, combining tender tofu, fresh asparagus, and a nutty sesame dressing that leaves a satisfying, savory finish.
For ramen enthusiasts, the variety here is exceptional. The Tofu and Vegetable Ramen shines with delicate shoyu broth, deep-fried tofu adding a luscious texture contrast, and an array of seasonal greens and mushrooms that bring earthiness and richness to each mouthful. Meanwhile, the Grilled Chicken Ramen balances tender chicken breast slices with perfectly cooked noodles, boiled egg, and the classic nori and spring onion garnish—comfort in a bowl. The subtly spiced Curry Laksa too invites adventurous palates to explore complex layers of flavour with its aromatic broth and rice noodles.
Sashimi lovers will be delighted by the freshness and finesse of selections like the Sake Sashimi—seven pristine salmon slices—and the luxurious Toro Sashimi, a melt-in-the-mouth tuna belly experience. The Sashimi Moriawase platters offer a curated sampling, blending salmon, tuna, and yellowtail to satisfy any sashimi craving.
Dining here is more than just a meal; it’s an experience. The atmosphere, while described as a basement setting leading to an intimate and somewhat lively vibe, hums with a vibrant energy from the bustling crowd and swift service. Although some diners have noted the acoustics can be noisy, especially during peak hours, the warm, efficient service and the restaurant’s understated yet comfortable décor create a welcoming environment. The casual ambiance is perfect for everything from a quick lunch to a relaxed dinner with friends. One satisfied customer praises it as the ideal spot for ramen novices, while others appreciate the authenticity and consistently generous portions.
Customer feedback beautifully echoes the passion embedded in every dish: Jennifer H adores the Char Kway Teow for its authentic wok-fried noodles and juicy prawns, a testament to the kitchen’s attention to genuine flavors and textures. Kevin Eze highlights the great variety on the menu and finds the pricing reasonable, noting Hare & Tortoise as possibly the most authentic Thai and Japanese spot in London—a rare accolade. For those seeking vegetarian delights, the tofu-based ramen and crispy vegetable tempura present a flavorful and satisfying choice, even if you like a little extra kick. Despite some critiques about the noise level, the overall consensus celebrates the consistently fresh food, portion size, and value for money.
Whether you're craving the delicate artistry of sashimi, the comforting depth of a ramen broth, or the vibrant crunch of a fresh salad, Hare & Tortoise brings a slice of authentic Asian culinary culture straight to London’s cityscape. Its harmonious blend of quality ingredients, traditional recipes, and welcoming service makes it a must-visit destination for anyone eager to savor the true essence of Japanese and Asian cuisine in an unpretentious and friendly setting.
Go here almost every week for lunch. Fresh, delicious food served quickly. My favourite dish on their menu has to be the Char Kway Teow! Tastes really authentic, noodles are fried really well and the prawns are big and juicy. Portion sizes are really good and it’s great value for money!
Visited this restaurant twice and have enjoyed my time there both times. Great variety of options on the menu, great portion sizes and the price of the food is very reasonable too. Probably the most authentic Thai and Japanese food I've had in London so far, would definitely recommend to people who enjoy those cuisines.
Perfect Japanese restaurant in my opinion; wide variety of tasty food, served fast and delicious as expected. The ideal place to take ramen virgin for the first experience of Japan’s finest cuisine. Only downside is that the interior is too nice! I expect my reasonably priced Japanese eateries to be shabbier.
Good Asian cuisine that provides consistent quality. The ambience isn't great as it is in a basement and the acoustics make it sound very noisy. We had the chicken katsu curry and chairshi don and enjoyed both of them. Servings were generous. Service was good and efficient. We got our food fairly quickly and it was a packed restaurant. I would return and eat at hare & tortoise again but perhaps at another branch.
Nice Asian restaurant in the basement. The name is a bit puzzling. The ambience wasn't great since it's just one long hall and tends to get a bit noisy. The vegetarian options weren't too bad. I had the tofu vegetable ramen, but I had to add a lot of hot sauce to spice it up. Loved the vegetable spring rolls and veggie tempura though.
Slightly expensive. Service tends to be good and fast but when I went it was a bit slow. Do book your table before going. Mobile signals issue as they are in thr basment and they have no wifi either.
